Dear NAMIC-Philadelphia Chapter Members & Friends –

As my tenure as your chapter President winds down, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making 2011 one of our most successful, dynamic and growth-filled years ever!

I have been honored to serve as President of NAMIC-Philadelphia for the past two years. Partnering with our chapter leadership team and Advisory Board, together we have:

•	Increased membership and the diversity of our chapter members
•	Enhanced programming and professional development opportunities for our members
•	Engaged more sponsors than ever before in our history, strengthening our bottom line
•	Re-launched and branded our website, joined FB and launched our YouTube page

I am so proud of these achievements - and you should be too! When I first became president, I sat down with the leadership team and discussed the vision we had for the chapter. From there we set goals to move us towards our vision. It is amazing to look back and realize that through our efforts and your engagement, we met every goal and then some!

It is with great pride that I announce the 2012 NAMIC-Philadelphia Leadership Team:

•	President – Keesha Boyd
•	Vice President – Olakunle Ekundare
•	Treasurer – Wil Colón
•	Secretary – Jinni Kapp

You will hear more from them and about them in the coming months, but for now I can share with you that this bright group of leaders is poised to build on our momentum and lead the chapter to new heights!

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every one of you for your many contributions, levels of engagement and support of our chapter and my leadership. This has been an incredible experience that I will carry with me always. I would also like to say a very special thanks to our sponsors, Advisory Board, guest speakers, mentors and everyone who collectively helped make 2011 a year of progress and achievement for NAMIC-Philadelphia.

Have a safe and happy holiday season – and see you at our 2012 events!

Always,

Andrea A.
    Executive Speed Mentoring:
The Five Minute Career Builder

On October 25, 2011, NAMIC-Philadelphia held its second annual Executive Speed Mentoring event to rave reviews from all who attended! More than sixty chapter members and friends participated in the event, where they mixed, mingled and gained unique insights from fourteen dynamic cable executives and journalists.
This year, mentor diversity was expanded to include reporters from the local NBC affiliate (NBC 10, WCAU Philadelphia) in addition to top executives from across Comcast. “We are grateful to each and every leader that made the time to participate and support our chapter’s efforts in leadership and professional development,” said Andrew A. Agnew, President NAMIC-Philadelphia.

The evening began with networking and appetizers, followed by opening remarks from the Chapter President. Attendees were then split into groups and taken to their pre-selected executives, or “mentors”. From there each was allowed five minutes of one-on-one time with each executive.
While the mentees waited to speak with their desired executive, they were treated to a panel discussion, led by Rohan Patel, Director, PWC, Michael Delciello, VP, Business Development, Comcast, and moderated by NAMIC-Philadelphia member Dionne Vernon. This provided attendees with another opportunity to connect with executives and discuss topics ranging from professional development, to leadership, to personal branding.

Executive Speed Mentoring continues to be one of NAMIC-Philadelphia’s most popular events! Mentees commented that they found the candid conversations had with the executives very helpful and that the limited timeframe forced them to focus and ask their best questions in a concise manner. Many said that they planned to continue to build on their connections with executives after the event. Executives saw the benefit as well, saying that it was a great opportunity to meet other Comcasters and learn about their projects. To share more thoughts and feedback about the event take the after event survey.

NAMIC-Philadelphia would like to thank all attendees and executives for their participation and the planning committee for their efforts which helped make this event a success! Special thanks to exclusive event sponsor PricewaterhouseCoopers, http://www.pwc.com.

We would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our Hispanic Heritage Month event, A New Majority: The Growing Influence & Impact of Hispanics in the Communications Industry.

During the event, held at the Comcast Center on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, a dynamic panel of industry and business community leaders discussed how the communications industry is intersecting with the Hispanic community, while focusing on marketing and programming content both targeting and representing people of Hispanic heritage.

Panelists genuinely engaged the audience by sharing personal experiences and candid professional opinions. One of the most impactful take aways from the event was the collective belief of the panelists that we are all responsible for ‘paying it forward’ – giving back to our local communities and helping to provide access and avenues to opportunities and success.

The event was a hit with attendees and panelists alike and there were rave reviews for the discussion and the buffet which featured delicious and authentic Hispanic food and drinks. NAMIC-Philadelphia’s Membership Committee Co-Chair, Nick Jimenez, commented, “We are so grateful to our panelists for sharing authentic experiences and insights with us. This event is an ideal representation of our mission ‘to educate, advocate and empower for multi-ethnic diversity in the communications industry’”

To view photos from the event click here.
President of the NAMIC Philadelphia Chapter, former Director of the NAMIC Partnership Committee and Comcast Director of Diversity & Inclusion, Andrea Agnew is a volunteer force to be reckoned with! And we’re not the only ones who think so – recently, the Urban League of Philadelphia honored Andrea with the 2009 Volunteer Award at the 8th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Community Empowerment Luncheon. The award is presented to those that go above and beyond in their level of service and support for the Urban League.

Vice President of the NAMIC Philadelphia Chapter and former Director of NAMIC Programs & Events, Keesha Boyd was recently promoted to the position of Executive Director, Frontline Leadership Center of Excellence. In her new role she is responsible for leading a National team of Sr. Program Mangers and Leadership Instructors focused on driving strategic expertise, delivery and measurement of leadership content throughout the organization.

Keesha began her Comcast career with the Chicago Region in 2005 and has extensive experience in Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development, Change Management and delivering enterprise-wide development solutions for National Customer Operations. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University, a Master of Arts in organizational psychology and a Master of Education in clinical and counseling psychology, both from Columbia University.

NAMIC Philadelphia member and volunteer, Olakunle Ekundare was recently promoted to the newly created position of Director of Standards in the Technical Operations group at Comcast. Olakunle began his Comcast career in October of 2001 and has held positions in the engineering and procurement groups. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Temple University and will be completing his Masters of Business Administration as a member of the Executive MBA 17 class at Drexel University.

NAMIC Philadelphia Advisory Board member, Ron Phillips was recently promoted to Senior Vice President of Employee Engagement, Comcast Cable. In this newly created role, Ron is responsible for leveraging employee capability to transform Comcast’s customer experience. In this capacity, he oversees employee relations, labor relations, compliance, and employee loyalty and retention.

Ron is well known throughout Comcast as a leader with vision and passion for both the company and its 100,000 employees. His leadership in the company’s West Division (where he served as a VP of HR) and in the Chicago Region has proven that HR can help solve real business issues by tapping into the talents and interests of employees, empowering them to make the best decision for customers and the overall business.

NAMIC Philadelphia member and volunteer and former chapter secretary Rakia Reynolds has been busy and makin’ moves as usual! We’d first like to congratulate her on the birth of her third child and first son Bram Beckwourth Reynolds II, born February 18, 2010!

Her company (Skai Blue Media) was recently highlighted in the Philadelphia Business Journal and she was featured on the cover of Philly Weekly. Rakia was also named a creative ambassador for The Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation’s Philly 360 Campaign and was honored with other ambassadors by the mayor in mid-February. Most recently Rakia appeared on local ABC and Fox affiliates talking up the Philly Fashion Scene.

NAMIC Philadelphia Advisory Board member and former paragon Awards winner, Tina Waters was recently named Senior Vice President, Human Performance for National Customer Operations. In this role, Tina provides a critical human performance focus in the National Customer Operations group as Comcast continues to transform its front line and supervisory organization into a customer-centric workforce.

Her role positions her to work closely with Comcast’s field HR and Customer Operations teams to ensure the deployment of a world-class customer-facing employees’ recruitment strategy; the provision of clearer career paths; the promotion and retention of frontline employees through better training, empowerment, and creating a greater sense of community.

We’re doubly proud of Tina as she was also recently recognized as one of the “Women Worth Watching in 2010” by Profiles in Diversity Journal. The eighth annual “Women Worth Watching” special issue provides personal profiles of leading businesswomen. The women recognized were nominated by their colleagues, peers, and mentors for their achievements.

To submit an accomplishment for inclusion in our next edition of NAMIC Philadelphia ‘Makin’ Moves Membership News’, send a brief description (30 to 60 words) outlining your news or achievement and include your name, title, company, how long you’ve been a NAMIC member, e-mail and phone number to NAMIC_Philadelphia@cable.comcast.com.

Introducing Allison Brooke Gordon, one of NAMIC Philadelphia’s newest chapter members! When we asked what she hopes to gain from her future as a NAMIC member, she responded, “I’ve gained so much already!” She believes that her home in Philadelphia and current job at Comcast as a Communications Manager are both because of NAMIC and its connections (particularly Kathy Johnson and Brett Perkins). Find out more about Allison as she speaks about her job, her life, and what she hopes to continue to achieve as a NAMIC member.

1. Name: Allison Brooke Gordon

2. Title/brief description of job function: As Communication Manager in Public Affairs, I help tell the story of how Comcast enriches lives and local communities across the country

3. Nickname(s): Al, Allie, Alli G, ABG, Alli-cat, Oils, Allie, Alli-Gator, Alli-Babba, Babbs, Al-phabet, Ali-phant, Gordo

4. Employer (include Business Unit or group name if appropriate): Comcast, Public Affairs

5. Years in the cable or communications industry: 10 months

6. Where were you born? Brooklyn, New York

7. What was the first job ever held? Baskin Robbins, 31 Flavors (16 years old!) - towards the end of this summer job I could guess what flavor a customer would likely request as they walked toward the counter. I was usually right on!

8. What is the best piece of advice you've ever received and from whom? "You are your thoughts" the book The Secret.

9. How did you hear about NAMIC? I was paired up with Kathy Johnson in an Oxygen Mentoring Walk in 2006. As we walked through parts of Central Park, I told her what was top of mind for me (communicating health issues to a predominantly African American and Hispanic audiences) and she told me about NAMIC. It took off from there.

10. Why did you decide to join NAMIC? I hadn't heard of NAMIC before I joined the NY chapter in 2006 and I knew very little about the telecommunications industry. I wanted to learn more. I also saw NAMIC as a resource of people and opportunities that I wouldn't otherwise be connected to. My world was previously in environmental science and branding.

11. What do you hope to gain from being a NAMIC member? I've gained so much already! The city I currently live in (Philadelphia) and the job I currently have (Comcast Communications Manager) is because of NAMIC and its connections. Additionally, I hope to better understand how to connect with and communicate with multi-ethnic audiences. I also want to learn about all the components of a telecommunications industry and how it's connected to other industries.

12. What are your future career goals/aspirations? One of my future aspirations is to start my own business that provides a unique "experience" and benefit to a multi-cultural market. I would also like to write a book.

13. What are your hobbies/extracurricular activities? For now, it is yoga, marathons, triathlons, traveling; creative writing, music, and theater.
