The National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) Philadelphia Chapter hosted its signature event of the year, the 13th Annual Paragon Awards, to honor three remarkable individuals on January 25th, 2017, for their dedication and commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the communications industry.
NAMIC Philadelphia is one of NAMIC’s 16 chapters designed to educate, advocate, and empower multi-ethnic diversity in the communications industry. NAMIC was founded more than thirty five years ago to develop a diverse talent pipeline of next-generation communications professionals.

The event took place at the Le Meridien Hotel and began at 5:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception. After NAMIC Philadelphia members, sponsors and supporters networked over drinks and refreshments, attendees moved to the hotel’s ballroom at 6:00 p.m. to recognize the honorees over dinner.
Guests were greeted by the event’s host, Telemundo anchor Ramon Zayas. Ramon introduced outgoing NAMIC-Philadelphia President Angel Arocho, who provided opening remarks. Angel recapped the success the chapter achieved in 2016 including an increase in membership of 50% versus prior year, student membership increase, expansion of the chapter’s social media presence and recognition as Chapter of the Year and Leadership Team of the Year. Angel thanked the outgoing NAMIC Philly board members (Rich Belizaire, Dwayne Bien-Aime and Aisha Riley) as well as the numerous Committee Leaders, volunteers, chapter advisors and sponsors for their support throughout these past two years. Angel concluded his remarks by recognizing the incoming 2017 NAMIC Philly Board (President: Mia Beasley-Bonds, VP: Dwayne Bien-Aime, Treasurer: Marsha Lawton and Secretary: Naomi Williams) the event sponsors and congratulated the evening’s honorees.
Eglon Simmons (NAMIC National President & CEO) followed with congratulatory comments for NAMIC Philadelphia’s efforts across the past two year and for all three Paragon Honorees.
David L. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Comcast Corporation, provided brief remarks and personally congratulated each honoree. Afterwards each honoree was introduced and addressed the crowd with remarks thanking their families, colleagues and mentors for their success. They also shared how their own experiences molded and drove their resolve to become diversity and inclusion champions within their industry, companies and communities.
After the honoree recognition Rich Belizaire NAMIC Philadelphia outgoing VP addressed the crowd with closing remarks. Rich congratulated the honorees and shared a personal story that provided a view into the outgoing team’s approach to championing for diversity and inclusion. Angel joined Rich on-stage and led the crowd in a final round of applause and thank you for the 2016 NAMIC Philadelphia board, committee leaders, volunteers and supporters as well as the incoming 2017 NAMIC Philadelphia leadership team.
