On Monday, March 4, 2013, NAMIC Philadelphia hosted its inaugural membership meeting which was kicked off with an introduction from NAMIC-Philadelphia President Yasmine Ndassa, Ph.D., followed by a brief video message from Nick Jimenez, NAMIC-Philadelphia’s Membership Chair. Yasmine provided the audience with a few words on the chapter’s plans for the year before introducing the night’s first speaker, Martha Soehren, Ph. D., Chief Learning Officer of Comcast University at Comcast.
Martha thanked members for the “great purpose and passion that you put in to all that you do” and she shared one of her favorite moments as a NAMIC member. “One of my most memorable experiences at Comcast came from one of NAMIC’s mentoring events,” she said. “That short session led to the solving of a business problem and set one participant’s career advancement into motion,” she explained.
After Martha’s opening remarks, Chapter Advisor Charisse Lillie, Vice President of Community Investment, Comcast Corporation introduced the event’s main speaker, Nicol Turner-Lee, Ph.D., President and CEO of NAMIC. Nicol got the audience warmed up with a brief networking exercise and then gave attendees an overview of NAMIC’s beginnings and her thoughts for its future.
“We’re doing better, but we have more work to do, so you’ve got to get in,” she explained. “When I met Charisse, we were at the tipping point of where the industry was heading,” she added. “You’ve got to be IN to lead the next part of the media revolution.” NAMIC, she said, “helped me climb up the ladder … With our industry changing so much, you can’t sit on the sidelines. You’ve got to figure out how to leverage this organization to get to where you want to go.”
